My name is Sergio Shapiro and I am currently a business management major here at Florida State. Technology has always been a topic that interested me ever since I was young. I have always been that kid that people come to for tech help, and most of the time can solve the problem. While most people regard this as some out-worldly skill, I know that I have barely even scratched the surface of what there is to know and understand about technology. While I might understand the small tasks and issues I repair, I have no clue how they operate or work within the system itself.
While technology has always been fascinating to me, one barrier that I have with regards to pursuing a career in the field is that hardcore math and science are subjects that I am not compatible with. While I am somewhat able to navigate my way around the courses, I lack a solid understanding and grasp of the subjects. Conversely, when it comes to public speaking, logic, and analysis I have found that these topics are my strong-suits. During high school, I was on our school’s speech and debate team where I was able to further apply and hone these skills. Through this experience, I came to the conclusion that I want to pursue a career in the legal field.
Personally, some of the most interesting emerging technologies are machine learning and artificial intelligence. These technologies have and will continue to have major implications on the way businesses and societies operate and function. Alongside these monumental changes are the multitude of legal questions and issues these technologies pose. Whether it be privacy, responsible use, or contractual obligations between companies, the legal field is also evolving in conjunction with technology. As a result of this, I am extremely interested in becoming a part of tech companies legal counsel.
Finding a technology related class that did not require 3000-4000 level calculus courses as a prerequisite was a breath of fresh air for me. My main goal for this class is to learn as much as I can about the technologies we are going to discuss and find ways to explore other technologies I am interested in.
